Missing fingerboard inlays are all-too common on vintage Gibsons, but I’m relieved to see that all the inlays are still present and correct on this ES-330. Even so, most are just about hanging in there and will need to be re-glued. The fingerboard is relatively clean, but I think there’s room for improvement.

Your 300S has some unfortunate headlamps, but two rights don’t make a wrong. The area of the beam pattern on a wall that causes glare is just a small rectangular area even at 25 feet away. I suspect that you haven’t got the slightest clue of where to find this “glare box.” Plus, I suspect that your eyes aren’t quite sophisticated enough to determine if the glare thresholds of 700/1000 candela have been exceeded.

A: If your vehicle currently has a single-DIN unit, you will require a double-DIN dash installation kit. You may also need a wiring harness during installation and aux cables for connectivity. 

Full-range speakers are more complex than component speakers. Full-range speakers have the tweeter built in and rely on the subwoofer to handle the low-to-mid frequencies, while the speaker handles the highs. Full-range coaxial speakers are a good choice because the units require less external hardware while still offering crystal-clear sound quality.

An installer would probably be a good choice, especially since you have an electric antenna. Now, some third-party brands do have that capability but the styles may not meet your needs. However, the motor should be on the car’s power so the only thing needed is a switch or relay to manually trigger extension/retraction. Talk to your installer or if you email Crutchfield they, too, may be able to offer advice.

So okeh, to see as well as possible you’ll want to skip the overwattage bulbs and the weak standard and long-life bulbs; now let’s eliminate some more bad options in another fell swoop: any bulbs claiming to produce “extra white” light is best avoided (or super white, hyper white, platinum white, metal white, xenon white, etc). It doesn’t matter whose name is on the bulb — Sylvania Silver Star or ZxE, Philips BlueVision or CrystalVision, Wagner TruView, anything from PIAA or Hoen,, Nokya, Polarg, etc. — all the same bad deal. They have blue-tinted glass which changes the light color a little but blocks light that would reach the road if the glass weren’t tinted, so they give you less light than ordinary bulbs (not more). It’s purely for fashion; these bulbs (poorly) imitate the color, but not the performance of higher-technology HID and LED headlamps. The filament has to be driven very hard to get legal-minimum levels of light through the blue glass, so these kinds of bulbs have a very short lifespan, and there’s nothing about the tinted light that improves your ability to see — the opposite is true (less light = less seeing, no matter about the tint). A couple of years ago Sylvania got spanked pretty hard (30 million dollars’ worth!) for false and misleading “upgrade” claims on Silver Star bulbs, and theirs are among the least-bad ones, so the math kind of does itself: you’ll want to reject the whole category.

We tried a few more runs. First deleting the outer dualie wheels, rationalizing that what we lost in traction we’d make up for in wheel speed. We went slower. Then came my ace: those gorgeous Hoosiers in the tallest size they make. I’d scrounged up a set of cheap steel wheels hoping Ram hadn’t changed the lug pattern on the new axle. Hope in one hand, etc. I nearly cried when the wheels did not fit, our tires lying unsmoked in the pile of parts scattered across the staging lanes.

But I can’t control the locks and lights with my new radio. Maybe someday I’ll decide to cough up the bucks for that one last adapter. For now, though, I’m once again in love with my high-tech Corolla.

The biggest downside of the Pioneer AVH-1300NEX Multimedia Receiver is that it isn’t compatible with Android Auto. BUT, by my calculations, this means that although DOT specs for 9003 bulbs indicate 910 lumens (+/- 10%) at 12.8V, my wife’s car will be generating a little less than 800 lumens at the voltage actually supplied to the bulb. No wonder night driving is such a frightening experience.
