All those wires are carefully laid out in the proper configuration (different for different car models) and bundled together before they’re installed in a vehicle. And for cars made in the U.S., that bundling almost always happens in Mexico — specifically, in Juárez. It’s time-intensive work, and labor is cheaper in Mexico.

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is an exemplary vehicle from a brand that knows how to reinvent itself. For the main stereo, Five Star removed the climate, hazard, and traction controls from the original dash shroud.

GM’s Magnetic Ride Control adaptive dampers are standard on the Denali and available on the SLT. They tamp down unwanted body motions and produce a ride that’s firm but compliant. 

While the R165X3 will not win any sound competitions, the high-frequency rating gives the speaker a reasonable amount of a kick. The dome tweeter is made from a durable rubber surround, so it’s less susceptible to cracking and sun damage that can happen over time to paper-cone based speakers. 

This all-in-one unit—subwoofer, amplifier, and enclosure—was probably the easiest part of the installation; it’s about as plug and play as they come. Jesse attached a couple of hook and loop (aka Velcro) strips to the underside of the box, then threw it in the trunk; the strips provide enough resistance against the trunk’s felt lining to prevent the enclosure from sliding around. Easy peezy lemon squeezey.

The main reason for me writing though is to warn parents of junior riders that tire choice can have a significant impact on rollout. A bike with legal gearing can fail junior rollout when equipped with increasingly popular high-volume tires. I have witnessed junior riders being disqualified when racing on tires from 25c and up. It is very important to verify rollout when switching tires, even if gearing remains the same. My son has had very good experience with Challenge tires at 700x24mm. The diameter is consistent as labeled, where that is not always the case with other brands/diameters. The 25mm width seems to be the limit for juniors, as long as the 25mm measurement is accurate, which seems to be hit or miss.

It supports Apple CarPlay, making it convenient to integrate with Apple products. Besides that, it can still play CDs and DVDs. When it comes to connectivity, it can be linked to Bluetooth, a USB port, and an extra AUX input. The radio option offers both AM/FM and Sirius XM connectivity. Apart from the diverse music streaming alternatives, it can also support almost every video file format.

I miss it. That racket was the background to a wild and brilliant year for my family, when we turned a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with more than 280,000 miles on it into a camper and lived out of it. Not scrambling through Big Bend National Park’s Black Gap Road nor pulling itself and a buddy’s derelict Tacoma up Eisenhower Pass at 11,000 feet, the Ram’s boost gauge pegged at 21 psi for 30 minutes straight. Hell of a motor.

We had some work to do. Drag-racing lore says that for every 100 pounds you delete from a vehicle, you gain a tenth of a second in the quarter. By that math, in order to get the Ram down to the Viper’s 12.9-second time, we would have to pull 3820 pounds from the truck. It wasn’t just a tall order, it was outright impossible, but we busted out the tools anyhow, confident in at least one other trick we’d brought as a nuclear option: a set of Hoosier drag radials. First went that fifth-wheel hitch, and when we weighed it on our super accurate Walmart bathroom scales, it came out to 160 pounds by itself. Then went the tonneau cover. The tailgate followed, another 60 pounds. The rear bumper? Thirty more. Then the rear hitch. The spare tire alone was nearly 70 pounds. This was looking good.

That might be a concern in the long term. For now, businesses aren’t ready to make drastic decisions like moving factories, given the profound uncertainty surrounding these tariffs.
