A core element of a vehicle’s electronics is the wire harness. It acts as a backbone connecting the digital components to each other, and to other components, such as the engine or chassis. It also supplies power to the additional onboard electronic systems.

But here’s the kicker: I sat with the salesman long enough for him to turn me over to the “Big-Shot Nissan Executive here for one day only to make drop-dead deals.” That guy was worth talking to. He was ready to give me $10,000 off (I hadn’t even asked for it), but we got to talking shop, and shop for me is menu pricing. I told him I was impressed that auto dealers had adopted an amazing menu pricing system in their finance and insurance departments.

Instead, I tie threads only to the jack socket and neck tone pot, because I find that once they’re back in position, the other parts usually line up under the holes and two threads are a lot less likely to tangle. Once that’s navigated successfully, the reinstalled controls can be tested once again and our attention shifts to the fingerboard inlays.

This stereo integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with your vehicle’s built-in display to control phone calls, directions, music, and messages. It plays Bluetooth, USB, MP3, WMA, AM/FM radio, and digital media from smartphones.  It includes inputs for steering wheel control and a rear camera. It also has a preset, built-in equalizer and multi-color illumination options.

We check the electrics and everything turns out to be working – except the bridge tone control. Peeking inside with an inspection mirror, all the pots and the ‘black beauty’ tone capacitors appear to be original. The wiring harness will have to come out so I can fix or replace the potentiometer and I plan to source a vintage knob to replace the non-original part.

The window sticker has some fascinating numbers on it, too. I’ll get to the price in a moment, but let’s start with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy and environment information. It gets 11 mpg city, 17 mpg highway and 13 mpg combined. You are projected to spend $10,250 more on fuel over five years than the buyer of the average new car.

I decided to shop for a new deck with Best Buy — mostly because if you buy a deck that’s more than $100, you get the $65 installation for free. I went with a Sony receiver that has an AM/FM tuner, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and an auxiliary jack. It was a $109.99 deck on sale for $89.99, so they still gave me the free installation.

The Palisade comes in three trims. The $31,550 SE comes standard with eight-passenger seating. The $33,500 SEL model can be had with second-row captain’s chairs or the standard bench (for no charge) and adds safety and convenience features. The top of the range is the Limited, which bakes in everything available on the SEL and adds some exclusive niceties. Limited tops out at $44,700 and packs a ton of value at that price point. All-wheel-drive is available on every model.

Finally, good aftermarket speakers sometimes have worse bass than stock, not better, since they may be designed with the expectation that your system has a subwoofer. So, plan on adding another amp and a sub.

To get an accurate reading of the voltage drop, you have to measure the circuit with its normal current flow. That means all the bulbs have to be hooked up and working, and you’ll have to find a way to probe the socket without unplugging it. Some headlight sockets provide easy rear access to the metal terminals inside; if not, you may have to use a bit of cleverness: carefully insert a straight pin or unbent paperclip alongside each wire and into the socket until it makes contact, then touch your voltmeter probes to the exposed parts of the paperclips or pins. Or another technique is to remove the seal boot and probe the bulb terminals ahead of the connected socket. Avoid puncturing wire insulation unless there’s no other option and you’re prepared to effectively patch the hole immediately afterward.
